There are many volunteer positions at VIFCC...
Receptionist
The receptionist is the first volunteer the client sees. If the client is
new, the receptionist gives them an application to complete and refers them
to an interviewer. If the client has been to VIFCC before and is again
eligible for help. The receptionist initiates the process of obtaining food,
clothing or financial help.
Interviewer
The interviewer is responsible for interviewing new clients to ascertain
their eligibility for assistance. They review completed applications,
request supporting documentation and approves or disapproves the
Application. Existing clients in need of financial help also visit the
interviewer. The interviewer may be required to contact Duke Energy or the
client's landlord to negotiate a minimum payment to maintain services or
housing and, when satisfied, write a check to the agency, never to the
client.
Sorters
Clothes arriving at VIFCC need to be sorted into clean and soiled
groupings. Clean clothing needs to be sorted into categories suitable for
display or storage. The large volume of used clothing received at VIFCC
makes sorting a major task and one of our sorters work six hours a day two
days per week.
Clothing Volunteers
Helping clients select clothing for themselves and their children is an
assignment most clothing volunteers enjoy. They will help the client locate
the clothing they need, including size and color. That help includes helping
select other items including household items such as curtains, sheets,
towels and blankets.
Pantry Workers
One of the pantry worker's job is to help unload and shelve deliveries of
food. Upon receiving an order from a Receptionist, he/she bags items of food
and personal care items based on a USDA listing posted in the Pantry. The
allotment is altered to accommodate the abundance of a particular item and
the food is packaged consistent with the client's method of transportation.
Restocking the Pantry shelves ends the pantry worker's four hour day.
We now have a "state of the art" Choice Pantry, which the volunteer assists
the clients while they choose their needed food items. This allows our
clients to choose the items that their family would consume, rather then
given pre-selected items that are sometimes wasted.
Other Opportunities to Volunteer
Volunteers are also involved in computer data entry work, participating
in or managing special programs; making pick-ups and deliveries and a
variety of important support activities. |
