Volunteer Opportunities

Receptionist
The receptionist is the first volunteer the client meets.  If the client is new, the receptionist gives them an application to complete and refers them to an interviewer.  If the client has been to VIFCC before and is eligible for help, the receptionist initiates the process of obtaining food, clothing, or financial help.  Duties include filing, answering phones and basic computer skills.  People skills and a smile are an asset!

Interviewer
The interviewer is responsible for meeting with new clients to ascertain their eligibility for assistance.  They review completed applications, request supporting documentation and approve the application.  Existing clients in need of financial help also visit the interviewer.  The interviewer may be required to contact the local utility companies or the client’s landlord to negotiate a minimum payment to maintain service or housing and, when satisfied, write a check to the agency.  Social Service, Human Resources, or Customer Service experience helpful, but not necessary.

Sorters
Clothing and other donations arrive at VIFCC daily and need to be sorted for disbursement.  They are sorted into categories suitable for display or off-season storage.  The large amount of donations received makes sorting a vital task.  One of our sorters works six hours a day two days a week!

Clothing Area
Helping clients select clothing for themselves and their children is an assignment the clothing volunteers enjoy!  They assist the client in choosing the items they need, including size and color, in addition to household items such as curtains, sheets, towels and blankets, if needed.

Pantry
Pantry workers help load, unload and sort deliveries of food as well as assist clients in the ‘Choice Pantry’ with selections that best fit their family's needs.  We follow the USDA guideline to provide nutritious and well balanced meals.  Pantry volunteers must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Other Opportunities
Volunteers are also involved in computer data entry, participating in or managing special programs, making pick-ups and deliveries as well as a variety of other important support activities.
