Our Mission
To help our neighbors meet short term emergency needs for food, clothing and
other needed services.
Profile
The Valley Interfaith Food and Clothing Center (VIFCC) was founded in 1963 by
volunteers from two Wyoming churches. The mission of the Center was to help our
less fortunate neighbors meet short term, emergency needs for food and clothing
in
the immediate area.
Over the years, a number of other faith communities recognized the benefit of
having
a single agency minister to the less fortunate in their area, and signed on as
sponsors.
The Center is currently the agent for 28 faith communities and serves 13
communities
in the Mill Creek Valley and contiguous areas.
The services provided by the Center have also expanded over the years. In
addition to providing food, clothing, and personal care items, we offer limited
emergency financial assistance to forestall evictions and utility shut-offs, as
well as limited funds for emergency transportation and medication. The Center
also has on-site services of the Community Action Agency (CAA), as well as
assistance with Food Stamp and Social Security/Medicare applications.
Importantly, we help clients locate outside agencies which provide needed
services not available at the Center.
We depend on private donations of clothing, food, personal care products,
household items and funds to provide the above services. The Center purchases a
majority of its non-donated food supplies from Cincinnati’s FreeStore/FoodBank
and we follow USDA guidelines in selecting what we offer to our clients. Clients
are required to provide substantiation of need, and to discourage dependency,
are limited in the frequency of their visits. The entire operation is supported
by the generous services of a cadre of 140 volunteers.
We assist an average of 35 families each day of operation, which equates to over
15,000 people served each year. The majority of our clients (81%) need food, about
half (46%) need clothing and personal care items, and 14% require financial
assistance.
The Center is dedicated to providing an efficient, effective and compassionate
system for meeting the needs of our clients. |
